the PARK of Monza (click on the pictures to see them bigger) The park of Monza is situated in the north of the city and covers an area of 800 hectares, it is surrounded by a wall of 12 Kms. in length. It was created
in 1806 and later enlarged, originally starting as the park belonging to the
"Villa Reale" and then becoming a much larger area which includes,
apart from the "Villa Reale", the famous racing circuit, the horse
racing course of Mirabello, two golf courses, a polo field and a swimming pool The Autodromo (car racing circuit) started in 1922 through the initiative of the Automobile
Club of Milan and occupies the northern part of the park. The Autodromo is open all year round and has three connecting circuits. The
first is 5.750 Kms. long with the road circuit, the second is a high-speed
circuit with parabolic bends and is 4.250 Kms. long, the third, the smallest is
2.385 Kms. long. The Autodromo is considered one of the most important in the
world. Every year the Formula 1 race is held there and is a rich sports
tradition. The "Villa Reale" is composed of neoclassic style buildings;
it was built in 1777-80 thanks to the archduke Ferdinand of Austria from the
project of Giovanni Piermarini. Today it hosts the Civic gallery of art and the
historical Museum with cloths of the XVII century and works of the XIX century. |
